The Swedish Environmental Institute is to investigate the possibility for Luleå local traffic to use fuel cell buses powered by hydrogen in addition to electric buses. That’s because they don’t need any additional heat for heating during the winter.
– We see that interest in hydrogen technology is growing both for public transport and truck traffic, not least on long distances where battery electrification is challenging. In northern Sweden, it is particularly interesting given the large hydrogen investments being made there, says Tobias Gustavsson Binder, transport researcher at IVL.

Hydrogen can be produced via biogas, via electricity or pyrolysis of biomethane.
– Producing hydrogen from biogas through reforming or pyrolysis can be a way to continue to take advantage of the great environmental benefits that biogas gives us, says Anders Hjort, researcher at the IVL Swedish Environmental Institute.
