“The Three Musketeers: the interview”

A staging guided by the search for truth

In an interview for Linternaute, director Martin Bourboulon confides in the principles that motivated this new adaptation of Three Musketeers : “I didn’t try to stand out from previous versions, I didn’t try to build this film in opposition or in reaction to what had been done.” What he tried to do, however, was to offer something new to the spectators: “I was obsessed with hunting for the real. From that moment on, we slipped all the places of the bet on stage that we can, whether in the action scenes, in the acting, in the costumes, in the sets, but there was no desire to say “I’m going to do something different”. on the other hand the responsibility of saying to oneself “since we are going back there, let’s try to project a universe that is perhaps a little new and to have something that might have never been seen. I think it’s the correctness of the acting and the approach to the action scenes that guided my direction at the beginning.”

Louis Garrel and Vicky Krieps, an amazing royal couple

In The three Musketeers, Vicky Krieps and Louis Garrel play an amazing royal couple. The Queen of Austria has a lover, but still loves her husband, who is also motivated in his actions by the desire to please his wife. “I was interested in playing a woman from that era, who is completely open and who loves two men at the same time and who does not see why it is a problem to love more than one man”, details Vicky Krieps. “You shouldn’t be afraid in an epic adventure film to tell a very precise marital relationship between a king, a queen, and her lover. Cis a fascinating thing to say to oneself “a statesman, a head of state, what he does, he also does it to please his wife or not? Even for terrible questions to engage a country in war: does he expect recognition from the woman he loves? does he see if she is going to judge him?”
