the humanitarian crisis worsens with the drop in donations

Donations have declined and the UN World Food Program is unable to raise sufficient funds to help the Afghan population. Of the 38 million Afghans, 10 million have no assistance. An increasingly critical humanitarian crisis.

Against a backdrop of malnutrition and drastic erosion of women’s rights, the UN World Food Program can only help 6 of the 15.8 million Afghans in need of assistance. Three million, often children, are in a state of food emergency.

The war in Ukraine had already reduced donations, but with the conflict between Israel and Hamas, the situation has greatly deteriorated.

Consequence: the UN appeal which had requested 3.2 billion dollars was only 40% funded in December. This World Food Program provides 90% of Afghanistan’s food aid.

Since the Taliban’s return to power in August 2021, the country has been banned from the international scene and was hit hard last October by three earthquakes in the Herat region. 1,500 people have died and 150,000 are still trying to survive. In recent months, nearly half a million Afghans have been driven out of Pakistan.

Last concern: lack of water. The Afghans were already suffering from drought and the little snow compared to usual could make the situation worse.
