The hottest day of the year – despite hail, thunder and downpour

With June came dramatic weather to several places in the country.
Hail, torrential rain and thunder hit parts of Sweden, while a heat record for the year was measured.
– It was hot all over the country, 29.4 degrees were measured in Osby, which is the hottest temperature of the year, says Peter Kondrup, meteorologist at TV4 Nyheterna.

Saturday was a warm day across the country. The heat record in Osby was closely followed by nearby Hästveda with 28.7 degrees. However, we find the third place further away, in Örnsköldsvik, 28.7 degrees were measured.

– These are not unusually high temperatures, but last year we had to wait until the middle of June before we saw such heat, says Peter Kondrup, meteorologist at TV4 Nyheterna.

Severe thunderstorms and downpours

In several places, however, the heat led to torrential rain, thunder and hail. In Vemdalen in Jämtland there was, among other things, a good shower of hail.

At the Källö tunnel on Tjörnbron, a woman and a man were injured after a rock fell on their car. The cause is believed to have been a lightning strike and Tjörnbron was closed for parts of the day.

– There were severe thunderstorms, but perhaps not as much as expected, says Peter Kondrup.

The reason for the dramatic weather in some places is the moist warm air with a lot of energy.

– It gives rise to village clouds that grow into themselves, says Peter Kondrup.

It will be colder next week

The heat will last a little longer and on Sunday there may be continued high summer heat in several parts of the country. At the same time, there is a risk of torrential rain and SMHI has issued a warning for southern Götaland during the afternoon and evening.

– During the next week it will then start to taper off. Especially during the second part of the week, when it starts to get cooler, says Peter Kondrup.
