The woman was sleeping on the subway in New York.

Then a man came forward and set her on fire – the woman died from her injuries.

The suspect has now been arrested.

New York Times writes that at 07.30 on Sunday morning the police received an alarm that a woman was on fire on the subway.

According to the alarm, a man had approached the woman, thrown a burning match at her, and then got off the train.

Footage on social media shows the alleged perpetrator sitting on a bench on the platform and watching as his victim burns.

$10,000 reward

After smelling smoke, a police patrol spotted the woman at the Coney Island-Stillwell Avenue station. The fire was extinguished, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the New York Post, liquor bottles were around the victim, but it is unclear if that played a role in the incident.

The police are investigating the murder, and quickly released a picture of the suspect. They also announced a reward of 10,000 dollars, equivalent to roughly 110,000 kroner, to anyone who could provide information about the incident.

Discovered by private person

At 5 p.m. local time, the police announced that a suspect has been arrested. According to New York Post a private person recognized the man on board another subway train. The person beckoned to the police, who were then able to arrest the man.

Although crime in the New York subway has generally decreased in recent years, safety is a hotly debated topic, following several high-profile acts of insanity.

Last month, a gunman fled into a subway car after a shooting. Travelers had to throw themselves on the floor and there was traffic chaos while the police searched for the man.
