For connoisseurs of the genre, the MMORPG Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen has been eyeing the online role-playing game for the past 9 years. Intended to be a spiritual successor to classic PvE MMORPGs like Everquest, it was originally written by Brad McQuaid, one of Everquest’s founders. But for years, Pantheon’s stale, unattractive graphics got in the way. That should change.
What is the appeal of Pantheon?
Pantheon wants to address criticism 1: the graphics
This is the team’s announcement: In a news letter, the team announces that they are now focusing on 2 things (via pantheonmmo):
The team says, “One of the top comments we regularly get from the public is that our game looks old and unattractive. [Mit einer Grafik-Veränderung] we have the opportunity to reach a broader and more contemporary audience.”
This is an example of the new graphic that the developers are showing:
What should the new graphic look like?? The game should now look more like a painting, while retaining the rough core of Pantheon.
You already have a few pictures that you can present – there will be a video presentation in September.
How is this discussed? Unfortunately, the comments on MMORPG sites about the announcement are rather cynical (via mop): One writes “Cool, then it’s ready for Alpha 2034 and the game can appear in 2089.”
In fact, Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen is an MMORPG that many have been watching for a long time, but in which little progress can be seen. Much like Camelot Unchained, it’s a very ambitious, resource-constrained project that’s been around for a long time, but still seems a long way from “fun to play” or “release”.
This is a problem that plagues all “indie MMORPGs”, even the most promising ones like Ashes of Creation have extremely long development times and there are always phases in which you don’t hear anything about the game for a long time.
Still, a graphic overhaul for Pantheon is definitely a good idea, because the game just didn’t look like a modern-day MMORPG before.
