The home service let the person lie in their own feces for a week

A person in Skåne had been lying in his own urine and faeces with “flies and other insects” on him for a week – even though he had home care. The person had to be rushed to hospital by ambulance in severe pain when the discovery was made because the faeces had eaten away at his skin.

The municipality in question has made a lex Sarah report to the Inspectorate for Care and Care (Ivo). According to it, the person had not been sufficiently motivated to accept help and had himself refused help on repeated occasions.

“The user has frequently refused planned care interventions and in connection with a lack of
documentation and information transfer between personnel, the incident has not been noticed
time”, the investigation states.

A similar event has occurred

It was during an evening visit that the staff visited the user and that’s when the person was found on the sofa. Empty alcohol bottles were also found in the room and the staff felt the person was under the influence.

“There was a plate with sandwiches that the user had not eaten. The user stated that she did not feel well and did not want to eat or drink anything. The user only wanted the employee to call an ambulance,” the investigation states.

According to the investigation carried out by the municipality in connection with the report to Ivo, a similar incident “recently occurred within another unit”. The municipality further writes that it is important that home care staff receive information about the importance of not only asking people for help, but also offering help and justifying it.

“The user experienced great discomfort and insecurity as well as pain. Didn’t get their needs met either,” it says.
