TAMPERE. The Ice Hockey World Cup tournament got off to an electric start at the Tampere arena, when Darude played his famous hit Sandstorm before the match between the Lions and the USA. The 24-year-old hit received a rapturous reception from the home crowd.
– How can I say this modestly, but the song still gives me chills at a certain point, when the sound opens up properly, Darude i.e. Ville Virtanen sets the mood for the World Cup game at halftime.
Sandstorm has collected hundreds of millions of listens on e.g. Spotify. The song is one of the all-time Finnish songs in the world.
If you hadn’t done anything since the song was released, would you still be living on Sandstorm?
– I wouldn’t live anymore. Very few songs produce so much. Yes, something drips from there, but I’m not talking about sums in the media. The song still opens doors for me, that’s the biggest thing.
On Friday, the beautiful doors of the Tampere arena opened for Darude. He thought the venue was great and lit up from the light show that was built around the song.
