The historic museum is forced to close – after 71 years: “A grim choice”

The historic museum is forced to close after 71

The museum is running today with a deficit of millions.

“It is a grim choice we are forced to make, when the Dance Museum is one of the few museums in the world that specializes in dance. The collections are world-class with exclusive costumes, modernist visual art, a large collection of African masks and an Asian collection of masks and puppets”, says the museum’s director Hans Lindholm Öjmyr in a press release.

Considering changing premises

The current premises are located on Drottninggatan in central Stockholm and are owned by the Statens Fastighetsverk. The museum is now considering moving to the suburbs.

The Dance Museum opened on 3 June 1953 in the basement of the Royal Opera House in Stockholm.

— But before we find new premises, we are fully committed to renting both exhibitions and program activities elsewhere. We are a small museum that has to fight not to be forgotten, says Öjemyr to Dagens Nyheter.

Then the Dance Museum closes

“The dance museum closes to visitors on January 6, 2025 and leaves Drottninggatan in Stockholm. We are now looking to find new, more efficient and economically defensible premises, perhaps outside the customs,” says Öjmyr in a press release.
