The historic Finnish basketball event was close for Sara

Sara Bejedi was on top form in the Euroleague qualifiers, but her Hungarian club Szekszárd narrowly bowed out in the decisive qualifying match.

The historic Finnish basketball event was close on Wednesday night. Sara Bejedi was to lead his Hungarian club KSC Szekszárd to the European first division Euroleague. Szekszárd lost to the Czech Zabiny Brno in the second part of the qualifiers 73–80. Brno went on with a combined score of 147–139. In the opening part, Szekszárd had lost on the away court by one point.

Szekszárd already led their home match with a best of 10 points and was heading towards the Euroleague, but Brno grabbed the spot thanks to a strong last period, winning it by 24–10.

Bejedi scored 22 points in the match. He was already on the attack in the opening half. Bejedi scored 18 points and made all four of his three-pointers. The top performances are also noted by the Euroleague on their own social media accounts, praising the Finn.

If Bejedi and Szekszárd had cleared their way to the Euroleague, the starting season would have become a record for Finland in Europe’s number one competition. Never before would there have been two Finnish women in the Euroleague at the same time. It was already clear that Awak Kuierin Venezia plays in the group stage of the Euroleague. All in all, before this season, only one Finnish woman has played in the Euroleague, Meral Bedredt in the 2016–2017 season.
