The heat wave that has plagued Southern Europe in recent days has now reached Sweden. Very high temperatures are expected in parts of Götaland and Svealand, where SMHI has issued an orange warning for high temperatures.

On Wednesday, 35.3 degrees was measured in Målilla.

– It is the highest measured temperature in 30 years, so we have to look back to 1992 to find something similar, says SVT’s meteorologist Tora Tomasdottir.

“Paint a heat hole”

Målilla is a place that often gets record listings.

– Målilla is both a cold hole and a heat hole. It is located in reasonably low terrain where it becomes windless and a little less cloudy. Then you get solar radiation in the summer and very high temperatures. In winter, it can also be extremely cold, says Tomasdottir.

National record in danger

On Thursday, even higher temperatures are expected, and the national heat record of 38 degrees can be broken.

– Somewhere between Målilla and Norrköping, there are stations that have the potential to break the record, says Tora Tomasdottir.

Then colder air draws in over the country

– It is short-lived, already on Friday the heat releases the grip. Then it becomes more normal. There will be a fairly large temperature difference from Thursday to Friday.
