Bill Skarsgård is currently taking on John Wick as the Marquis in the cinema, but he is more famous for another villain role: He has played Stephen King’s horror creation Pennywise in the two hugely successful IT films. In February, plans for a series about the history of Derry horror became known. Since then, the question has been whether Skarsgård will play the horror clown again. But now he has rejected it
Bill Skarsgård gives his Pennywise successor a helpful tip
In an interview with YouTuber Jake’s Takes, the third youngest scion of the Stellan Skarsgård family acting empire was asked about a return in Welcome to Derry. His answer:
As of now, I’m not involved in [der Serie]. If someone else [Pennywise] plays, my advice would be: make your own version. Make it your own. have fun with him
It’s not yet known if evil personified will play a role in the series, but it’s likely. The horror clown returns in changing forms every 27 years to terrorize the city.
In any case, for Skarsgård, Pennywise was a playing field on which to let off steam, which was due to the character’s “abstract” nature in Stephen King’s novel, he explains further. You can decode the character as an actor for yourself and he also recommends the possible new Pennywise:
If anyone does it, must [die Person] just take the book apart and find all the clues. They’re so outlandish that you can just draw your own conclusions from them.
Pennyswise, or the eponymous It, therefore offers its performers a great deal of freedom for interpretation.
What is known about the prequel series to the horror hit It
At the official Welcome to Derry announcement, the following was revealed about the upcoming series:
The first installment of It grossed over $700 million worldwide in 2017, making it – unadjusted for inflation – the highest grossing horror film of all time made (via The Numbers). So it’s not surprising that the streaming service HBO Max is aiming for a series.
Welcome to Derry does not have a start date yet.
Bill Skarsgård, on the other hand, doesn’t let go of the horror genre. Last year he starred in Barbarian streaming on Disney+. The Crow reboot is already filming. In it he plays the undead avenging angel Eric Draven. He then switches back to action in Boy Kills World, which is also in post-production.
