Over seven years after the big fire in Grenfell Tower in London, the 24-storey house will now be demolished. 72 people died in the fire.

The Housing Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner announced his decision on Grenfell Tower “to a room full of survivors and relatives” on Wednesday, says the group Grenfell Next of Kin, who represents families, in a statement on X.

An investigation presented last year showed that the 72 deaths “all could have been avoided”.

Both several governments and the construction industry, inspectors and fire brigades were responsible for “decades of errors” that paved the way for the big fire, according to the investigation.

Since then, victims and relatives have criticized the British government for not implementing fire safety recommendations fast enough.

On the night of June 14, 2017, a fridge and freezer began to burn on a low floor. The fire brigade was quickly in place, but still could not prevent the fire from reaching out to the facade – and there it could spread upwards with a furious pace. Many of the 400-600 tenants barely escaped.

Facade plates that were put there during a renovation in the mid-2010s were immediately pointed out as crucial for the rapid course of the fire. Similar tiles have also been used on hundreds of other British buildings.
