Naturopathy, meditation, osteopathy, yoga… Thanks to the health crisis, well-being practices are attracting a growing number of French people. However, this vast sector is very poorly supervised, even less controlled, and the explosion in demand opens the door to all sorts of abuses: renunciation of care, delay in diagnosis, pure and simple scams, sectarian-type influence or even now sliding towards conspiracy. This summer, Doctolib found itself caught in the turmoil because it referenced problematic naturopaths, claiming to be Irène Grosjean or Thierry Casasnovas, champions of raw foodism, objects of numerous reports to Miviludes. But the survey conducted by Valentin Ehkirch and Sébastien Julian shows it: behind these highly publicized figures, many other pseudo-therapists pose a problem. Seemingly less conducive to charlatanry, yoga and osteopathy are in reality not exempt from excesses either. L’Express asked Pr Edzard Ernst, a scientist who has worked for 25 years on the evaluation of unconventional care practices, how to regulate this field. His answer is unambiguous: “A real regulation would be to clean up all these professions (…). Failing that, information must be provided so that the public becomes aware of the foundations and the reality of these practices”.
