The healthcare system missed a child’s broken arm – it was discovered several months later

When a child came to the emergency room in Värnamo, he was told that his elbow was dislocated. Although an X-ray examination was carried out, the medical service did not see a fracture and when the elbow was then put back in place, it was judged that the damage had been repaired. However, the patient did not regain mobility as expected. Several months later, when the child had another X-ray examination, the fracture was discovered. Region Jönköping County has reported the incident to Ivo according to lex Maria.

Extensive surgery

In the report to Ivo it is stated: “The child had to undergo a major operation with a subsequent extensive rehabilitation period. At the moment, it is unclear whether full functionality will be achieved given the delayed processing”. An extensive training program has been developed after the incident for the clinic’s employees so that the same mistake will not be repeated, the report also states.
