The health of swimming stars is symptomatic and the calendar is bulging – the expert sharply criticizes the value settlement: “No sporting grounds”

The health of swimming stars is symptomatic and the calendar

There are only three Finnish swimmers at the World Championships, which start on Saturday. Olympic bronze medalist Matti Mattsson has fallen far short of last year’s record.

shows the World Long Distance Swimming Championships. The competitions can be watched on TV2 and Areena.

Long Track European Championships, Olympic Games, Short Track European Championships and even Short Track World Championships. On top of that is another ISL swimming league. Last year’s swimming calendar put the top European swimmers in particular.

The Tampere swimmer competed in all four value events and a lot in the ISL swimming league. Hulkko is not the only Finnish swimmer who has said that he has suffered from exhaustion in recent years. Jenna Laukkanen told about it last year.

Several superstars are missing from the long-track World Cup. Four-time gold medalist at the Tokyo Olympics Emma McKeon as well as two gold reached the earthly Ariarne Titmus focus on the Commonwealth Games. The same decision was made by a far-flung Olympic champion who dominated the 200-meter breaststroke Tatjana Schoenmaker.

Last summer, at the age of 17, reached Olympic gold in the 100-meter breaststroke Lydia Jacoby did not survive the World Cup team. British star swimmer Adam Peaty is on the side due to injury.

The swimming king collapsed

The omissions of athletes are often due to individual factors, but according to Kallinen, there can be talk of an Olympic hangover for certain swimmers. He raises, for example, the current number one name for the species, the United States Caeleb Dresselin. Michael Phelps the superstar compared was the swimming king of the tokyo olympics with five gold medals.

– Dressel has talked about the situation really openly. He finished the international swimming league in the middle of the season in the fall and left the short track World Championships because he was mentally so burned out. He had to draw a little oxygen from this hustle and bustle, Sport’s swimming expert Ville Kallinen says.

– Finnish swimmers have probably had a need for money, which is why they have had to go swimming in international swimming league competitions. They don’t have the same luxury that a swimmer like Caeleb Dressel has. Many swimmers would certainly have benefited from having a decent vacation after the Olympics.

Kallinen reminds that last year the Finnish top swimmers were the subject of exceptional attention to the sport. The Olympic bronze and two European Championship medals increased interest in the entire team.

– For a long time, there has been media attention and pressure that may not have been so much before. Dealing with it may have been challenging.

“No sporting grounds”

This year, a total of three value competitions are expected. After the long-track World Championships, the long-distance European Championships will be held in Rome, Italy. Towards the end of the year, the short track World Championships will be swimming.

The World Championships on the long track should originally have been held in May in Fukuoka, Japan. However, Japan did not want to hold the event this year because of the coronavirus situation.

However, the International Swimming Federation FINA wanted to hold the World Championships, which have been postponed several times already this year, so Budapest, which hosted the prestigious events, was able to hold the event. Fukuoka, on the other hand, will host the World Championships next year.

Kallinen criticizes FINA’s decision to force the World Cup this year. According to him, long-distance European Championships organized by the European Swimming Federation (LEN) would have been enough. FINA and LEN are not the same organization.

– I don’t think it has a sporting reason to have so many races. It has quite another political and economic interest to hold the World Cup. I think a good athletic decision would have been at most one of the value races this year.

This year, however, the Professional League ISL will not be held. The background is, among other things, the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The swimming league is almost entirely funded by a Russian-billionaire in Russia Konstantin Grigorishin.

Finland with a team of three athletes

Only the reigning Olympic bronze medalist in the 200-meter breaststroke will be on the Finnish competition team at the World Championships in Budapest Matti Mattssonbackstroke Mimosa Jallow and a swimmer Veera Kivirinta. The team was previously named European Champion Ari-Pekka Liukkonen mixed Fanny Teijonsalo withdrew from the Games due to health problems.

In the previous long-distance World Championships held three years ago, the best Finnish ranking was given by Ida Hulkko. She was eighth in the 50m breaststroke. Finland’s previous World Cup medal is from the 2013 Barcelona Games, when Mattsson was third in his bread.

Mattsson, who was in the top draw last year, improved his 200-meter breaststroke record by almost two seconds and swam in the Olympic final with his current SE time of 2.07.13. The best time in Pori for this year is 2.10.27.

According to Ville Kallinen, Mattsson was at least two seconds behind last year’s pace in the spring.

– For (2.10,27) you can get from the initial rounds to the semi-finals. Compared to last year, Mattsson had already swum on August 2, 26.

Although Mattsson does not seem to be in a draw like last year, Kallinen still trusts the Olympic medalist’s ability to strike at the World Cup.

– For example, the earlier performance of the 2013 season did not look like Mattsson could take the World Championship bronze. It’s really hard to say what Mati’s condition is. I expect Matti to swim in at least the semi-finals in the 200-meter breaststroke, Kallinen is confident.

Matsson’s competitor in the ME pace

Despite some absences, the World Cup will see a number of shines seen in Tokyo, such as Caeleb Dressel and Katie Ledecky as well as Hungary Kristóf Milák.

Sprint’s cannon Dressel’s strongest distances are the 50 and 100 meter freestyle. He has the potential to break the Brazilian César Cielo Filhon set world record times in 2009 of 20.91 and 46.91.

– The whole world of swimming, for example, monitors whether Dressel is able to break the world records of 50 meters and 100 meters in a long pool.

Kallinen also highlights Mattsson’s competitor Zac Stubblety-Cookin name. The reigning Olympic champion in the 200m breaststroke swims a few weeks ago for a new world record time of 2,05,965

– It will be interesting to see if he can repeat his fitness at the World Championships. Many Australian swimmers tend to swim really hard in their country’s qualifiers, but they flop in the standings.
