The headmaster of Öland extended the school days – the parents are raging

– My son in preschool class is not home until half past four three days a week, says Helle Henriksson.

According to the parents, the children are tired, absent and cannot cope with their leisure activities or spend time with family or friends.

More movement and reading

The school days have been extended to get more motion passes into the schedule, to be able to invest more in reading for the students with half classes and give more airy days with more breaks.

Hear the headmaster and head of education respond to the parents’ criticism in the video below.

Longer than at other schools

Most parents in the preschool class have protested and sought answers as to why Åkerboskolan in Löttorp has longer days than other schools in the municipality.

– Each school has its ability to design their teaching. The timetable available is just a minimum. Here you saw this need, says Roland Hybelius, head of education in Borgholm municipality.

Long bus trips

One of the reasons why parents are particularly critical of the times is that many children go school bus where several children have around an hour’s journey easy way.

-This feels like City-School times where you have a walkway in ten minutes to and from school, says parent Helle Henriksson.

Faced with snacks following the criticism of parents

The preschool class eats lunch already half past eleven and has not been offered any more food, which made the parents feel forced to send food to the school – which should really be free of charge. But from now on, the school will offer the students concerned snacks for the longer days.

It’s been a semester and a half – shouldn’t you have done it before?

– Yes, maybe we should have done that. You can always make mistakes and you can always do better, but now there is a snack there, says the principal Cathrin Wiström.
