Budding artists, this new hair trend is made for you! Exit balayage, ombré hair, and other classic colorings, make way for a new form of modern art with ‘hair painting’. A real phenomenon on social networks, this inspiration translates into all kinds of patterns painted on the… hair. An entire program.

Go unnoticed ? Very little for the younger generations who redouble their imagination, and now their creativity, to stand out through ever more extravagant aesthetics and clothing. Something that is not unrelated to the return of certain vestiges of the 2000s – low-waisted jeans and flashy pink in mind – and which tends to propel ‘hair painting’, the new hair inspiration in vogue, to the rank of flagship trend. of the year 2023. Podiums, social networks, influencers… the hair painted with patterns is simply everywhere.

If the ‘hair painting’ is not new – we remember the leopard skulls of the male models during the Versace fall-winter 2019 show – it is the first time that this art of a new genre has been propelled to the rank of unavoidable trend, as much acclaimed by the stars as by ordinary mortals. From December 2021, it was the British top Iris Law who caused a sensation with kawaii-inspired flowers painted on her blonde hair for the needs of a campaign for JW Anderson, before repeating the exercise a few weeks later with leopard patterns this time to immortalize the Ed Hardy by Siberia Hills collection. An experiment that left no one indifferent to the point of seeing the trend swell over the months to turn into a real fashion phenomenon.

    Over 200 million views

But the catwalk star is far from being the only follower of ‘hair painting’, far from it, as evidenced by the hairstyles adopted over the months by Megan Thee Stallion, and more recently Lizzo. And that’s without counting on top athletes, basketball players and footballers in the lead, who have followed one another for several years to wear hair paints, each more unusual than the next. This is particularly the case of Dennis Rodman, a specialist in the field, who recently entrusted his hair to Jackie Bieber, a hair artist based in Los Angeles, a master in the art of ‘hair painting’. Just take a look at her Instagram account to see that anything can be done with hair dye, a brush, and (a lot of) dexterity and patience.

On TikTok, ‘hair painting’ is already driving the counters crazy with more than 200 million views in total for all the associated hashtags, and as many videos revealing in turn regressive, classic, or on the contrary ultra complex patterns. From simple flowers, hearts and stars, to manga characters, words and landscapes, all kinds of graphics find their place on the hair of users of the Chinese social network, transforming them into life-size canvases. Something to satisfy all passions.

If the ‘hair painting’ seems much easier to reproduce on short hair, it is clear that the longest hair is also beginning to adopt the trend, revealing even more spectacular designs. This is the case of the user @Alfredlewislll who caused a stir on TikTok with long wigs decorated with psychedelic patterns. Something which, it will be understood, is not within everyone’s reach. If the ‘hair painting’ can be reproduced at home with dye, gloves, and different brushes, it is better to entrust your beautiful hair to an informed professional to avoid any disappointment – or be satisfied with very basic patterns.
