The Guardian magazine withdraws from messaging service X – citing “disturbing content” | News in brief

The Guardian is the first major British media outlet to pull out of the platform owned by billionaire Elon Musk.

In Britain, the center-left newspaper The Guardian has announced on Wednesday that it will no longer publish content about the billionaire Elon Musk’s owned messaging service in X.
The Guardian is thus the first major British media outlet to withdraw from the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Critics say hate speech and false content have increased on the platform since Musk bought the service in 2022 and reduced content moderation.

As justification for its withdrawal, The Guardian referred to the “disturbing content” circulating on X, such as racism and conspiracy theories.

– We believe that the benefits of being in X are now smaller than the negative effects, and that the resources can be better used to promote our journalism elsewhere, the paper writes.

The role of X and other social media has been talked about in Britain this year. In the summer, widespread anti-immigration riots broke out in the country when false information about a knife attack in Southport spread on social media.
