The grocery stores took in 330 billion last year

Food sales grew by 7.5 percent in 2023.
That according to the Swedish Grocery Retail Index, which states that growth was driven by inflation.

In total, sales of food and non-alcoholic beverages amounted to close to SEK 330 billion last year. This is an increase of SEK 23 billion, or 7.5 percent.

According to the industry organization Swedish Grocery Retail, it is inflation that drove the growth. Adjusted for inflation, sales instead fell by 4.7 percent.

“The past year has meant a trying time for Swedish households and also for the grocery trade. Traders have been pressured from two sides at the same time. Partly due to increased costs, partly due to meeting a consumer with weaker purchasing power, who buys fewer or cheaper goods,” says Karin Brynell, CEO of Swedish Grocery, in a comment.

Physical trade accounts for all of the growth last year, while e-trade has declined.
