The grim numbers: Swedish Christmas food costs so much more this year

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Christmas is just around the corner and the food to be served on the Christmas table has increased significantly in price. This is shown by figures that Swedbank commissioned the independent site Matpriskollen to produce.

A Christmas bag with around 100 of the most common foodstuffs such as ham, cheese, salmon and potatoes has become 14 percent more expensive this year compared to last year. The calculation shows that those who spent around SEK 3,500 on Christmas food last year can expect the same box to cost almost SEK 4,000 this year.

But there is a very large variation in the price trend. Dairy products have increased the most, with whipped cream and cheese standing out. Even classics such as Potatoes, Meatballs and Salmon have increased significantly.

The expert’s most important savings tips

To the delight of many, however, the Christmas ham has not had the same rise – and there is also happy news for the candy pig.

– Syrup, sweets, chocolate, soft drinks and a lot of useless things have not gone up in price, says Ulf Mazur, CEO of Matpriskollen.

But for those who don’t just want to eat chocolate and drink soft drinks during the Christmas holiday – there are things that might be good to think about.

– Make sure before Christmas to shop at extra prices, that’s the most important thing, and make sure you buy the things you need. But don’t buy too much, says Ulf Mazur.
