The Green Party wants the grade F to be abolished. The limit is too hard and excludes students who want to start upper secondary school.

– We do not believe that students should be failed, says spokesperson Märta Stenevi.

The grade F, or fail, has been controversial since it was introduced.

Passes in mathematics, Swedish, English and five other subjects are currently required for upper secondary school admission.

The Green Party now wants the grading system to be changed. Too many students’ future plans are crushed because the F limit is too hard. Even students who fail must be able to be given a path on to upper secondary education.

– We have listened to the debate and therefore the party board will propose to the congress that we work to remove the grade F, says spokeswoman Märta Stenevi.

The government says no

As many young people as possible need three more years in school to avoid the risk of, for example, being involved in gang crime, according to Stenevi.

– What is happening now is that we have young people who, at an extremely formative age, are told that they failed and are therefore failed, and then we drop them out of school.

On the other hand, the government does not want to review the border between pass and fail, something that was established when a state school investigation was given a new task in March.

Last year, 18,000 students, or around 15 percent, left the ninth grade without a high school qualification.

The Green Party’s announcement comes before the party’s congress in November and is a proposal for a new education policy program from the party board.

– I think it has every chance of getting support at our congress, we have heard these signals for a long time, says Stenevi.

Grade from seventh

In parallel with such a change, the school must receive more resources to be able to support all students. The MP believes that the government is underfunding welfare.

Recently, the Center Party decided at its meeting that the grade F should be investigated.

MP also wants grades later in school than today. Grades from grade 6 now apply, but the party wants to see grades from grade 7.

– Feedback to students is important and takes place already from pre-school class, but the grades also cause a lot of stress for the children, says Märta Stenevi.

FACTS The Green Party’s proposal in brief

The Green Party’s proposal for a new education policy program:

The grading system needs to be investigated in order to remove the sharp pass limit, investigate the possibilities with the Fx grade (which means that even F gives credit points) and evaluate the effects of having the grade fail.

The investigation will provide examples of how a grading system without failing grades can work when it comes to admission to upper secondary school and university.

The investigation also needs to make suggestions regarding the increasing legal uncertainty regarding grades, which are used for marketing purposes and where teachers are put under pressure to give higher grades than they deem correct.
