In August, the scrapping premium was introduced, which gives 10,000 kroner to those who scrap their at least 15-year-old car in favor of an electric car. The requirement is that the old car is inspected and has environmental class Euro 4 or earlier.
Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari (L) has highlighted the award as one of the government’s climate-related initiatives.
However, the forecast of a full 50,000 cars has been criticized for being a little too broad.

Cool interest
Since the scrapping premium was introduced – on 20 August – only 56 cases have been received by the Housing Agency, which therefore handles the grant. 28 cases have been granted, 8 have been rejected, 1 has been dismissed and 19 cases are still open.
There are 23 cases with registered payments, which means that SEK 230,000 has been paid out so far, according to the Housing Agency.
In total, the government has earmarked SEK 250 million for the scrapping premium in 2024 and 2025. This means that the money is enough for 25,000 premiums per year.

At the time of writing, however, interest remains cool.
