The government wants to tighten the rules for currency exchangers

Information received by the police from the encrypted service Encrochat points to the fact that five currency exchangers could launder SEK 150 million within a couple of months, the government writes in a press release.

Among other things, the government wants to introduce suitability requirements for those who engage in currency exchange. Furthermore, registration with the Swedish Financial Supervisory Authority (FI) is proposed as a requirement for conducting the business. FI is also proposed to have increased sanction options.

“We have to stop the drug money, and currency exchangers have been shown to play a key role in laundering black money. This proposal is therefore an important step in the government’s work to crack the gangs “, says Minister of Finance Max Elger.

The proposal is now being sent for consultation.
