Sweden is in NATO, but several limitations remain in order to optimally receive military support. Now the government has decided to adopt a national plan for military mobility.

– It is needed to strengthen Sweden’s security and NATO’s ability to deter and defend, says Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M).

– It is important that it is possible to quickly and efficiently move military resources through Sweden and that Sweden has a good ability to give and receive military support.

Obstacles can be deficiencies in the infrastructure, but the problems can also be of a technical, administrative or legal nature. Jonson mentions processes linked to the handling of explosive substances, export control issues and the need to develop new transport corridors.

– Not least through the Nordic area, where the military geography mainly goes from west to east and where a number of flows need to be strengthened, he says.

Can Sweden today not get the help it is supposed to because of these obstacles?

– I wouldn’t put it that way, but there is an opportunity to strengthen this type of military mobility.

The armed forces are tasked with implementing the plan together with other relevant authorities. The assignment must be partially reported in November and finally reported in January.
