The government: The defense budget will grow by 13 billion in 2025

On Tuesday, the government and SD will hold a press conference on budget investments to strengthen Sweden’s military defense, where Defense Minister Pål Jonson (M), Oscar Sjöstedt (SD), Mikael Oscarsson (KD) and Anna Starbrink (L) will participate.

– The international security situation has continued to deteriorate, says Minister of Defense Pål Jonson (M), at the press conference.

He highlights both Russian hybrid threats in Europe and the war in Gaza.

The appropriations for the defense budget are now proposed to increase by SEK 13 billion, from SEK 125 billion this year to SEK 138 billion in 2025. The sum includes costs for the re-acquisition of military equipment that Sweden sent to Ukraine

This means that Sweden’s defense budget in 2025 will amount to 2.4 percent of GDP, according to NATO’s way of calculating.

For the period 2025-2030, the government proposes an addition to the military defense of over SEK 170 billion. This is estimated to correspond to 2.6 percent of GDP in 2028.
