The government: Massive expansion of new nuclear power by 2045

The government is proceeding with the expansion of nuclear power. By 2035 at the latest, new nuclear power corresponding to “two large-scale reactors” must be in place.

– Within 25 years, we need to double energy production in Sweden. The road map we are presenting today clarifies the government’s target image and provides the long-term conditions for this to become possible, says Ebba Busch.

The Tidö parties also announce that a massive expansion of nuclear power will take place by 2045.

– Then we are talking the equivalent of ten large nuclear power reactors, says Tobias Andersson (SD), chairman of the economic committee.

Investigation into the permit process

Ebba Busch tells us that the goal of 100 percent renewable electricity production is now being replaced by 100 percent fossil-free.

They also remove the ban on the number of nuclear power reactors, and add an inquiry to look at how to speed up the permitting process for new nuclear power.

Credit guarantees are introduced

On Thursday, the government decided that credit guarantees for investments in new nuclear power will be introduced. Busch says that the National Debt Office is tasked with taking preparatory measures to be able to issue the credit guarantees, and to assist the government office in designing them.

The government will also develop an economic risk sharing model where the state steps in and shares the risk with the actors who build new nuclear power.

– This will cost money, we are saying today that we are taking an active role. The guarantees are incredibly important, but it will not be enough, it will be required that the state also participates and shares the risk. We will have to come back to what it should look like when this has been investigated, says Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M).

The government has previously announced that a new nuclear power coordinator will be appointed.

– We will get back to who it will be shortly, says Ebba Busch.
