The government loses its majority in Luxembourg

With 29 percent – an increase of 0.9 percentage points compared to the 2018 election – the CSV became the single largest party, according to election results published on Sunday evening.

And this time, Bettel’s coalition consisting of his liberal Democratic Party (DP), the Green and Social Democratic LSAP, is not standing in the way. The three parties lose two seats and thus get 29 of the parliament’s total of 60 seats.

— The people of Luxembourg have spoken. We have been given a clear mandate to lead the next government. The blue-red-green majority no longer exists, Frieden said shortly after the election results were announced.

One of his options when the government negotiations begin on Monday is to try to form a coalition together with the outgoing Bettel, whose DP increased slightly and gained 14 seats. Another possibility is to turn to the Social Democrats, who won 11 seats in parliament.
