Since 2023, a law indicates that all Burkinabè aged 18 to 35 must now do their national patriotic service (SNP). This week, the government launched an appeal to the public and private sectors to transmit the list of their employees affected by conscription.

In a press release dated Tuesday, May 7, 2024, the government of Burkina Faso invites all public and private structures, communities and companies “ to declare the list of their personnel for their incorporation » to patriotic national service under penalty of sanctions.

The SNP, compulsory for 18-35 year olds, was unanimously adopted by voters by the Transitional Legislative Assembly on August 17, 2023. It is in addition to the voluntary military service reinstated in 2015 under the transition of Michel Kafando and to the corps of Volunteers for the Defense of the Fatherland (VDP) created in 2020 by President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré.

Patriotic national service is part of “general mobilization” decreed in 2023 by captain and president Ibrahim Traoré.

The official objective of the SNP is to promote the civic and military engagement of citizens, but the conscripts will above all constitute an army of reservists “ so that they come and make their contribution to the fight against terrorism », had then justified the Minister of Justice Edasso Rodrigue Bayala to the deputies.
