The decision was taken during a Council of Ministers chaired by Captain Ibrahim Traoré. It coincides with the position adopted by the Burkinabè authorities who have increased contacts with their neighbor Niger since the July 26 coup.
The bill validated by the authorities thus provides for the sending of a Burkinabè military contingent to its Nigerien neighbour. According to the Minister of Defence, this decision is in line with the will of the mali and Burkina to support the military in power in Niamey. After the coup, the two countries had, in a joint press release, announced that they would stand alongside the Niger in the event of intervention by the standby force ECOWAS.
