The Google Messages app has a handy feature that lets you edit a message after it’s been sent, just like other messaging apps do. It’s perfect for correcting typos and avoiding misunderstandings!
With over a billion monthly active users, Google Messages has established itself as one of the leading SMS, MMS and RCS applications. And, to do this, the web giant has had the good idea of constantly seeking to bring it closer to popular instant messaging services, such as WhatsApp or Signal. Thus, messages can be enriched with links, emojis, photos and videos in high quality, typing indicators show when the correspondent is typing, group conversations are possible.
Recently, Google announced a whole bunch of new features (new recorder, Selfie GIF, reactions to messages, better contact management, etc.) with, of course, a touch of artificial intelligence, in order to stay at the forefront of trends (see our article). Enough to make you want to abandon the good old SMS for RCS technology! And the web giant clearly doesn’t intend to stop there! Last December, several lines of code were detected in the APK of a beta version of the application concerning a message editing function, before it was deployed on the beta channel. It is now available to everyone!
Google Messages: Message editing is available
Now, messages can be edited within 15 minutes of sending. Just long-press on the message you want to edit and then select the pencil icon. Once you’ve made the changes, just press the “Enter” button.
A “Modified” label then appears under the message to indicate that it has been edited. Of course, the tool works with the RCS protocol, the main argument of Google’s application. Let’s specify that the application only allows you to correct a message already sent, but not to hide the first version. The recipient can consult the history of modifications at any time.
Instant messaging apps are increasingly looking to one another to offer ever more flexible and adaptable communication. It is therefore logical that the Mountain View firm has deployed message editing, given that many competitors, starting with WhatsApp and iMessage, offer this option. On iMessage, users have two minutes to modify a message, compared to fifteen for WhatsApp. The applications generally notify correspondents when a message has been modified.
