There are red cards – and then there are red cards.
During this weekend’s FA Cup qualifiers, goalkeeper Connor Maseko was sent off for the most bizarre reason.
– We are shocked, says the coach.
When we talk about red cards in football, it is often about a tackle that was well over the line. The absolute most common is just two yellow cards after two questionable incidents, but sometimes the red card can come up for the oddest of events.
Bizarre red card
What happened in England this weekend might not have happened on the very highest stage, but it was still in the first round of the FA Cup qualifiers. The score was 0-0 when Blackfield & Langley goalkeeper Connor Maseko couldn’t hold on any longer.
Yes, literally. He needed to pee so much that he stepped out from behind the sideline, found a spot right behind the goal cage – and emptied his bladder in a bush. Opposing players, in the Shepton Mallet team, noted what was happening and quickly alerted the referee.
“We are in shock”
Connor Maseko received a red card for the incident, and it was a costly “toilet break” with others.
– He hid himself well. He was inside the fence. Sometimes you just have to go, defends coach Conor McCarthy afterwards, according to the BBC.
The match ended 0-0, but afterwards Blackfield were unhappy with the referee’s decision.
– I didn’t understand anything. I could never have believed it. We are all in shock, he says.
With it being a draw, the game will be replayed this week, and ahead of that game Blackfield have already joked about it:
“See you on Tuesday, and hopefully we can plan our toilet visits a little better”.
