Romanian football goalkeeper Helmuth Duckadam died on Monday at the age of 65.
Helmuth Duckadam became internationally known when, in 1986, Steaua Bucharest, which he represented, beat Barcelona in the final match of the European Cup, the precursor to the Champions League.
Duckadam saved all four of Barcelona’s attempts in the penalty shootout in the final played in Seville. Steaua’s European Cup victory remains the greatest achievement of Romanian club football.
Duckadam started to be named as Sevilla’s hero, and he even got into the Guinness Book of Records for his performance in the penalty shootout. He played two matches for the Romanian men’s national team.
The Romanian Football Association announced that it will hold moments of silence in all the matches it organizes in memory of Duckadam.
– Romanian football lost a legend. All of us who love this sport lost a role model, Chairman Razvan Burleanu said on the website of the Romanian Football Federation (FRF).
