A young couple and their three-year-old child were killed in one of the bombings.
The woman, who was 30 weeks pregnant, was dying when she was taken to Al-Emirati Hospital in Rafah, but her life could not be saved.
Saved by caesarean section
The baby in the womb, a little girl, was delivered by emergency caesarean section. Her condition was critical and doctors performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Mohammed Salama, head of the neonatal unit, told Reuters.
The girl weighs 1.4 kilos and is being cared for in an incubator. She is gradually getting better and her condition is now described as stable, according to Salama.
– The child is receiving medical care and will stay here for another three or four weeks. After that, we will see how the child is doing and where she should be left, whether it is with an aunt, an uncle or the grandparents. That is what is the worst, he says and continues:
– That even if the child survives, she was born an orphan.
