What do Ingemar Stenmark, Björn Borg and Wayne Gretzky actually have in common?
Besides being damn good at sports, their paths crossed in 1982.
In one of the most powerful battles of all time on Swedish soil.
In 1982, a whole bunch of the world’s greatest sportsmen gathered for what would become the only competition of its kind ever. From the very most popular athletes, eight huge superstars were handpicked and flown to Gothenburg.
World famous names
The competition was named “World Sports Masters” and on the starting line were lined up well-known names such as Ingemar Stenmark, Björn Borg, Wayne Gretzky, Kevin Keegan, Sugar Ray Leonard, Stefan Persson, Vita’s Gerulaitis and Pele up. The aim was to select the very best athlete from the world stars in a range of different disciplines to see who was the most all round in their talent.

Everything was decided in Scandinavium and televised to millions of viewers. But even though the planet’s best athletes lined up, it was not a success and the event was not repeated after 1982.

Stenmark & Castle
It is still extremely impressive to see old clips from the competition and above all when Stenmark, Borg, Gretzky and Keegan make up in an unforgettable race of 60 meters. Despite completely different sporting backgrounds, it gets really exciting and it’s so powerful that all four finish in under 8 seconds on the stretch, see the video below.

“The Great One shows what he really stands for. All four here are some of my biggest childhood idols in their respective sports. What legends,” writes another.
“They knew Björn Borg would have won by far so they forced him to take off his shoes,” writes a third.

It was then Ingemar Stenmark who took home the overall victory during the star-studded World Sports Master 1982 in Gothenburg. An incredibly powerful recognition for the Swedish slalom icon in such tough competition.
