Filip Gustavsson broke the record in the first game of the NHL playoffs.
But last night the fans were furious after a decision on him.
“I’m completely mute,” writes profile Ryan Whitney.
24-year-old Filip Gustavsson has had a huge breakthrough in the NHL this season. The former Luleå goalkeeper, who was also on loan in Södertälje when Covid-19 shut down the AHL, went to the Minnesota Wild before this season, and it has been a success.
Broke the record
Gustavsson has been a fixture in the Wild’s A team and in total there have been 39 games in the world’s best hockey league. Earlier this week, the goalkeeper also got the chance to make his very first playoff game in his career, and talk about showing his front feet properly.
In the first game of the playoff round against the Dallas Stars, he had a save percentage closer to 97(!). He also made 51 saves, the most by a Minnesota goaltender in a playoff game all-time. Many thought that Gustavsson was also a given in the second game of the series, but he is competing against the iconic goaltender Marc-André Fleury, and to the surprise of many, it was the veteran who got to step into the game of the night.

The great anger
And it would turn out to be the wrong decision. Fleury had a 77 save percentage and gave up a total of seven goals as the Dallas Stars evened the series with a 7-3 win. And on social media, there were experts furious at the fact that Gustavsson was poked.
“Explain to me how in the world Filip Gustavsson doesn’t start this match after the effort in match one? I’m completely speechless,” writes former NHL player Ryan Whitney, who now also has the world’s largest hockey podcast.
Even fans were furious, even though goaltending is something Minnesota has done all season.
“He had 52 saves in the first game. It does not matter what routines exist, or whether one has more experience. They go for the hottest goalkeeper, what on earth is Minnesota doing?”, writes a supporter.
