The 16-metre-long giant aquarium called Aqua Dom, located on the ground floor of a hotel in Berlin, exploded at 05:45 local time today. With the resulting pressure, approximately 1 million liters of water and 1,500 fish in the aquarium spread to the street, along with some items inside the hotel. Berlin police said there was no evidence of intent in the incident, in which two people were slightly injured.

Berlin Mayor Franziska Giffey, in a statement to the press, said that if the giant aquarium exploded 1 hour late, there could be death cases and compared the event to a tsunami.

Police, firefighters and emergency crews were working at the scene, while engineers were checking the hotel’s integrity, it said. It was stated that most of the tropical fish in the aquarium could not be saved. (DHA)
