The package includes, among other things, a one-time subsidy of 300 euros to cover energy costs to be paid to millions of pensioners.
Germany has enough energy reserves to get through the winter, said the German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Sunday.
The German government approved a 65 billion euro support package to ease the situation of households as Russian gas supplies dwindle and energy prices rise.
According to Reuters, discounts on public transport travel tickets will be continued, and tax breaks of 1.7 billion euros will be directed to companies that use a lot of energy in their production. There are approximately 9,000 companies receiving relief.
For example, Germany is trying to cut down on windfall profits from energy companies, which can be used to finance households, the government said. The Treasury minister Christian Lindner estimates that the measure could bring “a double-digit amount of billions of euros” in relief.
According to the AFP news agency, the document states that timely and proportionate relief for citizens and businesses is necessary as energy prices rise.
The package includes, among other things, a one-time subsidy of 300 euros to cover energy costs to be paid to millions of pensioners. The corresponding support for students is 200 euros. In addition, those who receive housing support are paid a heating fee.
The support package approved now is already the third in a row in Germany. The two previous packages have been worth a total of 30 billion euros. They have included, among other things, a gasoline tax reduction and support for public transport travel tickets.
