Mark Cerny is considered the technical genius behind the PlayStation, but he has only been in charge since the PS4. Now he has discovered something surprising that many gamers have known for a long time: FPS are a good thing in gaming.
Mark Cerny is considered one of the most famous people in the PlayStation world.
In a recent interview, he explained that he is surprised that many games for the PS5 are released at 60 FPS.
At 30 FPS the graphics have more time to render
What exactly did Cerny say? In an interview with online magazine Games Industry, Cerny talked about what surprised him about developers and gamers alike. In one part of the interview, he was asked what impressed him most about developers, and the chief architect replied that most studios rely on 60 frames per second:
Based on previous console lifecycles, I would have expected there to be a lot more games running at 30 frames per second, simply because the graphics can be much more detailed when given more time to render. Instead, this time around, it’s almost the norm for games to run at 60 FPS.
This is great from a gameplay perspective. Most gamers prefer games with higher frame rates. I just didn’t expect it to be such a departure from previous [Konsolen-]generations.
He therefore concludes: players want FPS. And this is a realization that is probably not new for many games. The higher the FPS in a game, the smoother the game looks to our eyes. A well-known shooter player tested whether 144 Hz really makes him a better player and he was pleasantly surprised.
What else did Cerny say? He also explained that they would consciously choose certain features within a console generation. That is also the advantage of a console. Because the PS5 is not a “low-cost” PC:
One of the exciting things about designing console hardware is that we have the freedom to choose what we put into the console. In other words, we’re not trying to build a budget PC, and we’re not tied to any particular standards
