But when the number of electric cars increases, more charging stations are also required, while the number of petrol and diesel stations decreases.

So much fewer gas stations now

The fact is that there were close to 9,000 petrol stations in Sweden in 1968. Nowadays the situation looks different.

During the last year there was, according to a review carried out by DNa total of 2,641 petrol stations linked to the industry organization Drivkraft Sweden and roughly 500 supermarkets run by smaller companies.

At the turn of the millennium, there were also roughly 2,000 petrol stations with service. Of these, only 784 remained in 2023.

The sparsely populated area was hit hard

As recently as June this year, it was clear that two manned OKQ8 stations – located in Munkfors and Skoghall respectively – would close after the summer.
