2022 was the year of cannibalism. Well, at least in the film area. With Fresh, Disney+ not only published one of the best streaming movies of the year – but also an unusual and fantastic horror film from start to finish.

Fresh masterfully manages to combine several well-worn genres and thus to think in a refreshingly new way. The film begins as a frighteningly realistic comedy, in which a young woman wonders each day how many horrible dates she can endure before she is content to be alone forever. The dialogues she has with dating app acquaintances, the dead look on the inside when the comments of the other person become more and more stupid by the second – so far few films have dissected him so precisely nightmare of modern singleness.
But then director Mimi Cave and screenwriter Lauryn Kahn shift up a gear, away from the metaphorical to the clearly comprehensible nightmare that constantly surprised with new twists and films human flesh so lovingly that even Hannibal would have tears in his eyes.

Sebastian Stan, as a mixture of charismatic master chef and Reincarnation of Patrick Bateman from American Psycho equal parts laughs and chills. Daisy Edgar-Jones proves as a sometimes stunned, sometimes adorable witty woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown that she is one of the most exciting young actresses that the film industry currently has to offer.
Music, equipment, camera and fantastic leading actors: Fresh is a film that is exactly what the name promises. A breath of fresh air, not just for the horror genre, but for the 2022 streaming landscape in general. The perfect film for anyone who is in the mood for something Macabre in the midst of the holiday idyll have – or who want to convince themselves that being alone is sometimes the better choice.
