The state funeral of former US President Jimmy Carter will begin in his home state of Georgia at 5 Finnish time. Carter died on December 29 at the age of one hundred.
The first part of the funeral ceremony describes his journey from a small town on the Plains to become president and representative of democracy. Carter’s family arrives at the hospital in Americucse, from where the coffin is taken to the Plains, escorted by former bodyguards.
James Earl Carter Jr maintained a connection with his birthplace throughout his life. Also Carter’s spouse, mrs Rosalynn Smith Carter was from the Plains. He died at the age of 96 in 2023. When they were young, the couple worked in the nut business in their family’s company. The population of Plains is just under 700. The former president is buried next to his spouse.
The funeral procession stops, among other things, at Carter’s home and his parents’ grave. Today, the president’s homestead is part of a national park. The bells rung 39 times in the park. Carter was the 39th President of the United States.
The former Georgia senator’s motorcade will travel to Atlanta, where a moment of silence will be held at the presidential library and research center.
In Atlanta, the memorial service is held in a family circle.

About 3,000 people, from former employees to diplomats, will participate in the funeral ceremony of the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
State funeral on Thursday
President Carter’s casket will be flown to Washington, where the funeral will be held at the National Cathedral on Thursday.
All living presidents have been invited to the event. The memorial speech will be given by the outgoing president and a party colleague Joe Biden.
The president will return to his home town of Plains for the last time on Thursday. A private funeral service will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church. The president’s resting place can be seen from the porch of his birthplace.
