Maxime Recoquillé: Hello Charlotte, can I come in?
Charlotte Baris: Hello Maxime. Thanks for coming, take a seat. I remind our listeners that you are a journalist specializing in Tech at L’Express and I asked you to come into the studio before the episode, because I wanted us to do a vocabulary review, so that everyone have the keys to understanding the story on the front page of the magazine this week
Maxime Recoquillé: You’re right ! What term do you want to start with?
Charlotte Baris: Well I suggest you remind us what generative AI is…
Maxime Recoquillé: It is a type of artificial intelligence system capable of generating text, images or the like in response to requests, called a prompt. AI initially had fixed parameters and rules. But little by little, AI created its own rules and today the answers are more and more relevant. This is what allows them to generate content. This is the principle of ChatGPT and for it to work we use what we call LLMs.
Charlotte Baris: You anticipate my requests, because this is the second vocabulary point that I wanted us to address. What is an LLM?
Maxime Recoquillé: LLM for “large language model”. This is the basis of generative AI applications, it is the technology on which the software is based. The software, like ChatGPT, is a bit like the car and the LLM is the engine. You have the finished product, once we have added, for example, the bodywork, but the product only works thanks to the LLM.
Charlotte Baris: Thank you Maxime, we have everything we need to tackle this episode. In its latest issue, L’Express wonders how France can take a key place in artificial intelligence and more particularly generative AI. The challenges are numerous but the repercussions could be decisive…
