Charlotte Baris: After four episodes spent dissecting the front page of L’Express, you already know: in general, the magazine’s editorial team decides on its content more than a week in advance. The choice of articles and their length (what is called calibration) are decided at a department meeting, then announced to the rest of the team at an editorial conference. Meanwhile, the Iconography department is working on the illustration of the file. In short, from the middle of the week, time for interviews and reports, before writing. This is normally what should have happened this week, with an exclusive ten-page file on which journalists from the Science department have been working for several months…

I said “normally” because following the Hamas terrorist attack against Israel, a new change of front page was necessary. In the middle of the Jewish holiday weekend, hundreds of Israelis were killed in just a few hours, while a deluge of rockets fell on the country… The responses from the Jewish state were not long in coming. and tension in the region has reached an unprecedented level. It was therefore impossible not to cover this return to war in the Middle East. The editorial staff obviously mobilized to create a very rich file in a few days, and it is the creation of this file that we are telling you about in La Loupe today.
