Christian Folin paid tribute to Frölunda’s club badge – which was scrapped shortly afterwards.
Now he admits the lies to the media.
– How the hell could it go so wrong?, he says in the podcast Släpp Sargen.
An era ended when Frölunda announced that they were leaving the classic Indian logo behind. In the end, the criticism was too great, and they chose to go on a completely new path, and the process of developing a new logo was long and talked about. Many believed that Frölunda was completely wrong to bow to the criticism and change the logo, and the debate was enormous for a few months.
Failure with the logo
Christian Folin, star back in Frölunda, believes that it was a sad decision that he could not influence. The star would have preferred to keep the logo and everything around it – as he looked up to it for a long time.
– It’s very sad that the Indian is gone, because I grew up with it anyway. When I was little, the dream was to ride out of the Indian, because it was a cool thing. It’s sad, I think, but that’s the way it is. I can’t influence it in any way, and it’s just acceptance, he says in the podcast Släpp Sargen.
But Frölunda’s process of developing its new logo was not exactly straightforward. With hockey Sweden’s eyes on them, they proudly presented their new logo. But it was a huge fiasco. The logo was mocked by just about everything and everyone, and it didn’t take many hours before the club announced that it had changed its mind. They decided to scrap the logo completely, and promised to come back with a new, improved version, which the fans would also like.
“How could it be like that?”
Christian Folin remembers it all well. He was also of the opinion that the logo was not very successful, but as a player in Frölunda, he had to keep his cool.
– It was quite fun there, for a few days. We were on our way to the Olympics at that time, and got everything on the phone. It was… It was the topic of conversation for three hours, about what the hell had happened. After all, I got questions in the media about it, and I had to defend it. I had to say: We stand behind it, it will be fine. I simply had to pay tribute to it, he says.
However, it did not take many hours before a new message came.
– Then we trained, and I was informed that we had scrapped it. After all, I have stood and praised it for a while before. That’s how it can be when you stand and lie on TV!, he says.
Christian Folin is happy with the new logo, but he can’t help but think about what happened to the logo that was later scrapped. There were reports that the playing squad themselves had been involved in selecting the logo, but that is not something that Folin wants to know about.
– I don’t know how it could be so wrong. So, quite honestly… Who approved it? I wasn’t at the meeting when it was approved, he says, laughing.
