WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus evaluated the latest situation regarding the increase in global Kovid-19 cases and the monkeypox epidemic at the press conference held at the organization’s headquarters in Geneva.
Emphasizing that the global weekly number of new cases has almost doubled in the last 6 weeks, Ghebreyesus said, “Deaths from Kovid-19 are on the rise, although not as fast as the cases. Increasing cases mean that we can expect more hospitalizations and loss of life in the coming weeks.” said.
THE INCREASE MAY BE CAUSED BY A NEW VARIANT
Underlining that it is not known which variant of Kovid-19 was effective in the increase in recent weeks, Ghebreyesus said, “The reason for this increase may be a variant that we already know, or it may be a completely new variant.” he said.
Emphasizing that the new variant of Kovid-19 will be stronger and more effective than the old ones, Ghebreyesus said, “All countries must be prepared. Countries that reduce their capacity to fight the epidemic are taking great risks.” warned.
“While the hospitals are not yet full, now is the time for all countries to fill the gaps in virus surveillance, immunity, workforce, supply and resilience,” Ghebreyesus said. made the statement.
Stating that the current Kovid-19 vaccines are still effective against the risk of severe disease and death, Ghebreyesus called on WHO member countries to vaccinate the elderly and other groups at risk, especially healthcare workers.
THERE ARE 14 THOUSAND CASE OF MONKEY BLOWERS
WHO Director-General Ghebreyesus noted that monkeypox cases are also on the rise, adding, “There are approximately 14 thousand cases in more than 70 countries.” said.
Stating that 5 people lost their lives due to monkeypox so far, Ghebreyesus stated that all casualties were seen in Africa.
Emphasizing that many new cases are seen in Europe, Ghebreyesus shared the information that last week, the first case of monkeypox was seen in 6 countries.
