The French consume twice as much organic food than 20

A new study conducted by the WWF (World Wide Fund) has compared the eating habits of the French for 20 years. The result is a more focused attention on product quality and an awareness of production and distribution methods.

More than a trend, organic is part of a sustainable development approach where products from organic farming are not subject to chemicals, dyes and other pesticides. The WWF organization has just realized a new poll concerning the diet of the French and their relationship to organic, between 1998 and 2017.

The survey was conducted with a sample of 1002 people, representative of the French population aged 18 and over. They answered a questionnaire comprising 11 questions on their eating habits and their wishes in terms of consumption.

A desire to consume more “responsibly”

They were 35% in 1998 to buy organic food, today they are 62% to consume it! The main reason is that today this little green dot has become a quality criterion for consumers. In fact, according to the survey, nearly three-quarters of those questioned consider that they have changed their eating habits to move towards so-called more “responsible” products (organic, local, labeled, etc.) or plan to do so. The environment and health are important subjects for the 93% of French people who are aware that pesticides are harmful to their health. They would like to know exactly the quantities of pesticide residues present in their food.

It shows that consumers would also like better transparency on the price of products with details of the share attributed to the farmer, the wholesaler and the distributor. 69% even declare being able to pay more if it is so that farmers are better paid. This is 12% more than in 2010, which shows that attitudes are changing rapidly. As for the question of meat, 67% say they are ready, today, to reduce their consumption of animal protein.
