It was in a match between Adam Johnson’s English club Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers as the player according to the BBC got a skate rail to the neck.
The game was suspended and he was treated on the ice while the players formed a ring around him.
The arena was evacuated and Johnson was taken to hospital where he later died. Johnson turned 29 years old.
“Nottingham Panthers are devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following an accident during the match against Sheffield last night,” the club wrote.
Condolences continue to be sent to family and friends.
“Everyone at the club, including players, managers and owners, is devastated by the news of Adam’s passing.”
Johnson played in the Malmö Redhawks in the 2020-2021 season. He has also represented the NHL club Pittsburgh Penguins and played 13 games there.
Three Swedes play in Nottingham Panthers – Victor Björkung, Didrik Henbrant and Alexander Lunsjö.
