A legend of the western. An influential actor in Hollywood. And a controversial figure in film history because of his political views: Many different stories can be told about John Wayne. Today we want to take a look at his five favorite films, which he revealed almost five decades ago.
Slashfilm came across a survey by The People’s Almanac that was conducted in 1977 and asked all Oscar winners at the time: What are the five best films of all time? John Wayne also received a letter and responded with five titles – two of which he even starred in.
A Man in All Seasons was Western star John Wayne’s favorite film
Hardly any actor is as associated with the Western as Wayne. It is all the more surprising that he names a historical film as his favorite film: A Man in All Seasons. The 1966 film adaptation of Robert Bolt’s play A Man For All Seasons tells the story of Thomas More.

More was drawn into a conflict of conscience by Henry VIII when he was asked to swear the oath of the Act of Supremacy in 1534, which made the king head of the Church of England. The film adaptation of the material was directed by Fred Zinnemann (Twelf Noon) and won six Oscars in 1967including Best Film.

He made both of them with John Ford, who is the directing equivalent of Wayne: No other filmmaker has influenced the Western through his work as much as Ford. The Black Falcon in particular is an integral part of the story.
