The flu pushes the country’s emergency: “Tough period”

The flu has put hard pressure on the country’s emergency clinics in recent weeks.

But the Public Health Authority warns that the peak is not yet reached and that the spread of infection remains extensive.

Over the past two weeks, the spread of infection has increased from the flu and more people have needed intensive care due to the disease.

Earlier this week, 29 patients were cared for in a corridors during one night at the emergency room at Sahlgrenska University Hospital due to lack of space, writes Gothenburg Post.

We are in a very tough period right now. The late flu wave is high and came later than we expected. It has been a long period of high burden on ambulances and emergency, says Maria Taranger, area manager at Sahlgrenska to the newspaper.

Many worried

At the children’s emergency at the University Hospital in Linköping, there has been a clear increase in the search pressure for the emergency in recent weeks. There, above all, many parents have sought care for children with illnesses that can actually be cared for at home, according to Karin Wester, pediatrician at the University Hospital in Linköping.

Many parents are worried that the children are sick so long; Why don’t the fever let go, it has to be something crazy? But just like adults, children can become very ill and long in the flu, she says.

Several viruses in circulation

Right now, several viruses are in circulation-such as the RS virus, the flu and the gastric disease-but the flu dominates, according to Wester.

It’s been a while since we had an equally clear flu epidemic in this way, she says.

After the pandemic, we had a very tough RS virus season, when we had very high pressure on all children’s clinics throughout Sweden. It is a little year from year which virus dominates.

At Norrland University Hospital in Umeå, the spread of the influenza is noticed, especially among the staff.

We have had many in the staff who have been home sick and even many who are at home and wobble. However, we have not seen any extra search pressure at the emergency room, but it is as usual during an influenza season, says Paula Johans, operations manager at the emergency room.
